Unrested Souls: When the Dead Remain Among the Living

All living beings on Earth are mortal. Sooner or later we face the departure of people close to us. This is not a law we invented — it is the nature of life. After death, a person is usually buried. Sometimes, for different reasons, a proper funeral is not held.

After death, the soul leaves the body and must travel through the realm of the dead. At the end of that path it comes before the divine court of Erlik Khan. There its further fate is decided, and the place where it will stay. Then the soul either rises to Tengri or remains in the Lower World to atone for the sins committed in life.
In this system there is also a third possibility: the soul gets stuck, or returns to the Middle World. Such a soul is called unrested.
An unrested soul is the soul of a person or an animal that, for some reason, remains in the Middle World and lives among the living.

There are many causes and many signs. The most common cause is an unfinished term on Earth. In other words, the person left earlier than they were meant to.
People often say that a person lives exactly as long as fate has allotted. This is not always true. A human being is fragile. People make mistakes, leave the right path, take their own lives, develop chronic and inherited illnesses, work in harmful conditions, destroy the body with alcohol and other habits, receive pollution and punishment from the world of spirits. There are also murders, accidents, disasters, and wars. All of these can cut a life short and change a destiny.

In some cases of sudden death, the soul does not understand that death has already happened. It continues to live as if it were still a living person, and cannot understand why people no longer notice it. When life ends in this way, the soul may remain in the Middle World. It suffers, wanders, and without meaning to, disturbs relatives, loved ones, and even complete strangers.

After death the soul finds the road to the Lower World and, after some time, reaches the gates of the realm of the dead. If the earthly term is not finished, the soul is not allowed through and cannot come to divine judgment. Then a hard choice appears: return to the living, or wait by the gates until the term is complete. Most such souls were used to comfort in life and do not stay by the gates. They go back to people. They continue to live in their homes, stay in their cars, come to their relatives. In other words, after death they try to keep living the familiar life among the living.

In shamanic practice there are also cases when a living person themselves calls an unrested soul and binds it. Sometimes this happens without intention, sometimes by desire. It happens when a person cannot let the deceased go: keeps talking to them, remembers them constantly, weeps, calls them for help, asks them to come in dreams, visits the grave too often. Or, on the contrary, the soul itself does not want to leave.

Unrested souls are not rare in the modern world. They appear quite often in shamanic work. Not every shaman can diagnose them. This requires experience, access, knowledge, and strength.

Signs of an unrested soul

A shaman relies on certain signs during diagnosis. If an unrested soul is near a person, or if the person comes into contact with it, diagnosis can show this. Then an honest conversation with the client helps to make a precise diagnosis. The way of resolving the problem depends on the correct diagnosis, so a mistake here is costly.

First. The most obvious case: the person understands what is happening. They feel the presence of the deceased, hear them, see shadows with peripheral vision, feel a gaze, wake at night from a touch or from someone being in the room. In rare cases they see a form in the dark. The deceased begins to appear in dreams, calls them, tells stories, gives advice, leads them through other worlds in sleep, follows them day and night. In other words, stays constantly nearby.

Many people in this situation convince themselves that the deceased has become a guardian angel: that they help with important tasks, that they do no harm, because this is a loved one. Others try not to notice and ask the deceased to leave. The second response is wiser, but it still does not solve the problem.

Second. The person is not in constant contact with the unrested soul. The deceased may use the invisible thread that exists between relatives. They can live near one person, then leave and move from one family member to another — as if visiting. When they touch other people, they leave traces and can cause harm. A similar situation happens when someone with an unrested soul lives in the same space as you.

Third. Contact happens in a particular place — the place where the unrested soul lives. A person may not even know whose soul it is, and may never have met that person in life, yet still fall under their influence. This often happens through carelessness: buying used property — houses, apartments, offices, shops, cars, garages, jewelry.

When buying a house, it is wise to ask neighbors what happened there before the sale, who lived there, whether there was a murder or a suicide. The reason for the sale may have been a death. The owner’s soul may have remained in the dwelling and still consider the property theirs. New neighbors, especially with small children and animals, are rarely welcome. In such a place family happiness is hard to build. The soul will try to drive the new people out. The same can happen with other belongings: the soul will defend what it still sees as its own.

These are the main patterns. Other cases exist and are examined individually. If a shaman says that diagnosis points to a soul nearby, this should be taken seriously. Through dialogue and questions to the spirits, the shaman finds who it is and where the point of contact lies. That determines what must be done.

How an unrested soul affects a person’s life

For about a year after death, the soul still remembers who it was and may truly try to help the person it follows. With time it gradually forgets its life and begins to cause harm. It starts to feed on heavy energy and to draw life force from the person it follows, from the household, and from the places where it stays. Children are especially at risk: they are the weakest and most unprotected.

Around such a presence, financial and household losses appear. Money slips through the fingers: it comes and goes, or does not come at all. The unrested soul pushes people into sudden bursts of emotion. Conflict arises from almost nothing. A person may not even understand why they started arguing. The quality of life slowly declines, family relations worsen. People become irritable, aggressive, emotionally unstable. In some cases a marriage or partnership falls apart. There is no single pattern — it looks different for everyone.

The spirit gradually grows stronger, and its appetite grows. It begins to take more life force. What the spirit does also depends on who the person was in life: character, habits, views. If they were harmful, they will harm even more. If they were calm, they may stay quieter — but they still need to feed.

For the person being followed, the picture is heavier. The biofield comes under pressure. Weakness, apathy, fatigue, anxiety appear. Inner harmony disappears, sleep is disturbed. The emotional state moves toward depression. Health worsens, old illnesses flare up. A morally exhausted person loses interest in life and in other people. Colors fade, everything becomes gray. A heaviness presses on the mind, and thoughts of death may appear. The person cannot deal with the spirit alone. Many close themselves off and do not speak, not realizing that this state can also harm the rest of the family.

A special case is when a husband or wife dies first, and the unrested soul stays with the surviving partner. Then a new personal life is very hard to build. If a new union does appear, it rarely becomes happy. The spirit remains nearby, attacks the “rival,” and punishes the former spouse.

How the path is completed

An unrested soul is not an enemy by nature. It is a traveler who lost the road. As long as it stays among the living, it suffers — and the living suffer with it. The task is not to “destroy” it and not to keep it as a companion. The task is to help it continue the journey it did not finish: to the gates, to judgment, and to its proper place — whether that is Tengri or the Lower World.

This is why constant calling, endless mourning, conversations “as if they were still here,” and requests to come in dreams are dangerous. Love that cannot let go becomes a chain. The living think they are keeping closeness. In reality they keep the soul from leaving.

A shaman with the necessary access does not work with fear and not with curiosity. First comes diagnosis: whose soul it is, why it stayed, where the point of contact is — a person, a house, an object, a family line. Then comes the work of separation: to thank, to release, to close the road back, and to show the soul the path it must walk. After that, the living also need cleansing — of the body, the home, and the family field — so the empty place is not filled again.

If a marriage ended through death, the living partner must learn a difficult truth: fidelity to the deceased does not mean keeping them in the house. True respect is to let them go and to live the life that still belongs to the one who remains. The world is built on movement. The soul must move. The living must live. When each returns to their own side of the threshold, peace can return to both.
